Command a room with this breathtaking, museum-scale 1984 masterpiece by renowned American Abstract Illusionist George D. Green (1943–2020). Titled Diptych: "Setunthe woods on fire", this monumental, custom-shaped two-panel work spans a massive 103 inches wide and perfectly exemplifies the absolute peak of the 1980s Post-Modern avant-garde movement.
The artwork masterfully bridges two contrasting aesthetic worlds: a wild, heavily textured, expressionistic cloud-like background of soft pastels and striking gold impasto, overlaid with razor-sharp, geometric shards and electric lightning-bolt vectors. Green utilizes hyper-realistic trompe l'oeil shadowing along the edges of the geometric structures, creating a brilliant optical illusion that makes the shapes appear to break the physical picture plane and float in 3D space directly in front of the viewer.
Museum Provenance & Archival Markings
This work boasts exceptional institutional history, having been previously housed within the permanent collection of the Boca Raton Museum of Art before being deaccessioned to benefit their active acquisitions fund.
The reverse side of the heavy-duty wooden structures preserves pristine, clear provenance written entirely in the artist's own hand. Both halves are boldly cataloged and initialed under studio inventory registration #315, explicitly inscribed: "Setunthe woods on fire" / panel diptych / George Green 1984.
Condition & Display
Framing & Presentation: Conceived by the artist as a completely frameless, dynamically shaped sculptural diptych. The two custom-built panels mount seamlessly side-by-side using heavy-duty integrated metal alignment hardware brackets on the reverse, locking together to form one cohesive narrative across the wall.
Condition: Excellent vintage condition. The custom wood framing structures are completely stable and sound, the canvas tension is pristine, and the hyper-textured paint surfaces remain vibrant, secure, and fully intact with no paint loss.
About the Artist
