The seated coyote is rendered in a wonderfully spare folk-art manner, with an elongated howling muzzle, simple black painted details, articulated ears and limbs, and a sweeping carved tail.

Natural knots and variations in the wood remain visible throughout the sculpture, giving the piece considerable character. A rustic raffia tie encircles the neck.

Signed “Max Alvarez” on the underside.

A particularly appealing example of Southwestern and New Mexico animal carving, with a strong sculptural silhouette that works equally well in a folk-art collection or a more contemporary interior.
