Lavishly illustrated first English-language edition of The History of Decorative Arts: The Renaissance and Mannerism in Europe, edited by Alain Gruber and published by Abbeville Press in 1994.
A substantial large-format volume devoted to the extraordinary decorative vocabulary of Renaissance and Mannerist Europe, circa 1480–1630. Rather than approaching the period solely through individual artists or objects, the book traces major ornamental traditions—including interlace, rinceaux, grotesques, Moorish tracery, strapwork, and cartouches—across architecture, furniture, ceramics, metalwork, jewelry, textiles, bookbinding, painting, and sculpture.
The volume contains approximately 800 illustrations, around 500 reproduced in color, including numerous full-page photographs of museum objects, interiors, architectural ornament, tapestries, paintings, and decorative details. Chapters were contributed by Alain Gruber, Michèle Bimbenet-Privat, Margherita Azzi-Visentini, Marc-Henri Jordan, Francesca Costantini-Lachat, and Robert Fohr, with a preface by Jacques Thuillier and English translation by John Goodman.
Published by Abbeville Press, New York, as part of The History of Decorative Arts series. First English-language edition, 1994. Printed and bound in Italy. ISBN 1-55859-821-9.
A particularly beautiful reference volume for collectors of Renaissance and Mannerist art, decorative arts, historic interiors, European ceramics, textiles, furniture, and ornamental design—and handsome enough to function equally well as a large-format library or coffee-table book.

The hardcover book itself is exceptionally clean and well preserved, with clean pages and a sound binding. Original dust jacket remains bright and attractive with light edge and corner wear. There is a small, discreet mended area at the lower corner of the dust jacket, along with minor creasing/wear at the extremities. The repair is not visually distracting and the jacket presents very well overall. Please review photographs for condition details. less
