This piece focuses on motherhood as a memory from the perspective of the child. To be carried on the back has been a way to grow bonds for centuries. We now know it regulates the heart rate, temperature and breathing. It showcases intergenerational care, warmth, love and continuity and survival. The textile background of orcas and bitterleaves shows the violent maternal protection among marine life as well the cherished theme of nourishment throughout the diaspora be it to show care, community or an apology but also the physically healing properties of bitter leaves. This piece honors black history by illustrating our resiliency through not just maternal care, but communal care as well. She looks away to fix the shattered pieces of the textile while looking beyond it even as her child rests and looks to the future she works. Our collective care, pride, and existence is the definition.
