Antique George III English sterling silver sugar tongs, dating to the late 18th century and probably made by Joseph Hicks of Exeter, circa 1785 - 1795. The tongs have an elegant plain Georgian form with long tapered arms, shallow spoon-shaped gripping ends and a broad curved spring bow. The outside of the bow carries a period three-initial monogram.
The surviving hallmarks include a clearly recognizable lion passant for sterling silver, a George III duty head, and a distinctive IH/JH maker's punch. Specialist research (Bexfield Co, UK) into Exeter sugar tongs identifies Joseph Hicks as a prolific maker during this period and discusses the attribution of post-1784 duty-marked IH/JH sugar tongs to Hicks. The maker is not conclusively proven. Exeter sugar tongs of this period were also frequently struck without a date letter.
