Fine antique George III sterling silver sugar tongs, hallmarked in Newcastle upon Tyne for the 1801-1802 assay year. Elegant form with long tapered arms, small spoon-shaped ends and a broad curved spring. The bow carries an attractive period Gothic-script monogram.
The hallmarks are unusually well preserved and include the Newcastle three-castles town mark, lion passant sterling standard mark, George III duty head and Newcastle date letter L for 1801-1802. The maker's punch reads I-S (J-S in modern language). The maker is possibly John Stoddart, but I cannot establish that his mark was in use during the 1801-1802 assay year. A small separate X-shaped punch is also present.
These tongs are approximately 225 years old and in gorgeous condition. They weigh 35 grams and are 6 inches in length.
