A substantial vintage photography volume by legendary LIFE magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, documenting nearly four decades of 20th-century history through the lens of one of photojournalism's most recognizable figures.
Witness to Our Time brings together Eisenstaedt's photographs of major historical events, political figures, artists, performers, writers, and everyday life from the late 1920s through the 1960s. Subjects range from Europe between the World Wars and the rise of the dictators to the Great Depression, Hollywood, World War II, postwar Japan, Korea, Africa, the United Nations, the Kennedy era, and the performing arts.
Among the book's particularly striking design elements are its illustrated endpapers, filled with facsimile signatures of many of Eisenstaedt's celebrated subjects, including Walt Disney, Winston Churchill, Helena Rubinstein, David Lean, Janet Leigh, Christopher Fry, and numerous others.
First published in 1966, this example is the second printing, issued in 1967 by The Viking Press, New York. Printed in Switzerland by Roto-Sadag S.A., Geneva. The bold pink and red photographic dust jacket was designed by noted graphic designer George Giusti and retains its original $16.50 publisher's price on the flap.
An impressive oversized volume for a photography collection, coffee table, library, or display, with considerable appeal to collectors of LIFE magazine photography, midcentury photojournalism, and 20th-century cultural history.
