Expressive figurative work on paper by Canadian artist Jack Meanwell (1919–2005), depicting a standing nude rendered in energetic red, ochre, and graphite-like lines.
Meanwell reduces the figure to a series of confident, gestural marks, emphasizing movement, anatomy, and the physical act of drawing rather than precise representation. Layers of loosely worked color and overlapping lines give the composition an immediate, spontaneous quality characteristic of an artist working directly from the figure.
Signed “Meanwell” lower right. The reverse bears handwritten inventory markings, including “#1574” and what appears to be “87,” possibly indicating 1987.
Presented unframed. The sheet shows age and handling consistent with an original work on paper, including visible creasing, rippling, surface marks, and minor edge wear. Please review photographs closely for condition.

Jack Meanwell (1919–2005) was a Canadian-born artist who spent much of his career in Cincinnati, Ohio. Known particularly for his expressive paintings and works on paper, Meanwell worked across landscape, still life, and figurative subjects. His work is characterized by economical line, energetic brushwork, and an emphasis on gesture and color over tightly rendered detail.
Meanwell was an influential figure in the Cincinnati arts community and exhibited his work extensively during his career. His paintings and drawings continue to be collected for their distinctive combination of abstraction and recognizable subject matter.
