A pair of Tang dynasty style horse figures carved in a pale cream marble with buff tone and light natural veining. The horses are depicted standing on rectangular plinths with heads turned to one side, ears pricked and a thick mane in combed, striated ridges. The saddles are draped with a blanket carved with scrolling, foliate ornaments, breast straps and girth detailed with rosettes or buckle motifs. The pair are shown in mirrored poses perfect for flanking an entrance—as they did in the Southampton, New York estate from which they were acquired. No maker’s mark.
