A fascinating and extensively illustrated reference devoted to the unusual art and history of European porcelain tobacco pipes.
Tabakpfeifen sammeln: Kunstwerke in Porzellan – Ein Beitrag zur Geschichte des Rauchens by Walter Morgenroth was published in Munich by Laterna Magica in 1989. Far more than a general history of smoking, the book examines porcelain pipe bowls as collectible works of decorative art, tracing their development, manufacture, decoration, and use from the 18th through the 19th century.
Morgenroth documents examples from many of the most important German and Central European porcelain centers and manufactories, including Meissen, Berlin, Nymphenburg, Fürstenberg, Höchst, Frankenthal, Ludwigsburg, Vienna, Volkstedt, Wallendorf, Limbach, Ilmenau, and Bohemian manufacturers.
Individual chapters explore the development and manufacture of porcelain pipes, historic forms, Meissen tobacco pipe bowls, 18th- and 19th-century production, porcelain painters, problems of attribution, historic price lists and inventories, and related material. A substantial illustrated section documents surviving examples ranging from elaborate figural pipe bowls and portrait decoration to landscapes, floral painting, military subjects, and other highly detailed designs.
The volume is particularly useful as a reference for collectors of German porcelain, Meissen, European ceramics, antique smoking accessories, and tobacciana, with numerous period drawings, archival sources, and photographs of surviving objects.
Written in German.
