An original floral still-life painting attributed to American artist Walter Douglas (1868–1948), depicting delicate white blossoms arranged in a rich burgundy ceramic vessel. Executed with expressive, impressionistic brushwork and a beautifully restrained palette, the composition captures the quiet elegance of early twentieth-century American painting.
Douglas studied at the Art Students League of New York and the National Academy of Design and was a pupil of renowned American painter William Merritt Chase. A member of the prestigious Salmagundi Club,
Douglas exhibited at several major American art institutions.
This painting is signed in the lower right and retains an original Salmagundi Club Thumb-Box Exhibition label on the reverse, bearing the artist's handwritten name and an inscription identifying the work.
The reverse also bears a handwritten inscription referencing Walter Douglas and a Woodhaven, New York address, along with a subsequent Burchard Galleries auction label.
