In Raphael’s design, the standing Christ Child reaches toward the cross held by the kneeling young Saint John, a detail associated with Christ’s future Passion.
The painting is executed on a solid wood panel with a painted deep burgundy surround and a raised beaded border framing the central image. The pastoral landscape and figural arrangement closely follow the Renaissance prototype while reflecting a later devotional copy tradition.
