An original early-21st-century acrylic painting on canvas by outsider artist Eddie Ghent. Entitled “Holy Ghosts Haunt Sinners With Tales of Hell!,” the work presents a darkly humorous supernatural narrative populated by ghosts, sinners, skeletons, grave markers, and a red devil-like figure.
Set within a loosely rendered cemetery and waterside landscape, the composition depicts elongated white spirits descending upon a group of startled figures gathered near the shoreline. Crosses, gravestones, flames, trees, fencing, and skeletal remains fill the surrounding landscape, creating a densely populated scene that rewards close viewing.
Hand-painted words and conversational fragments are incorporated directly into the imagery. The uneven lettering, simplified figures, expressive proportions, and direct application of color give the painting its distinctive self-taught character. Ghent balances ominous religious imagery with irreverent humor, transforming traditional themes of sin, judgment, and the afterlife into an animated visual story.
The palette combines a broad field of green with a gray sky, blue water, and vivid passages of white, yellow, red, pink, and black. The painting is signed “Eddie Ghent” in the lower-right corner and is presented unframed on stretched canvas.
