An important example of early 1960s Italian design, the Mariano combines architectural clarity, sophisticated functionality and the distinctive sculptural vocabulary for which the Castiglioni brothers became internationally celebrated. This impressive composition consists of three individual vertical elements, together creating a monumental bookcase and storage wall measuring approximately 225 cm / 88.58 in wide. The central element incorporates a substantial double-door cabinet with internal shelving, complemented by an additional closed cabinet above. The two flanking elements feature extensive open shelving, providing generous space for books, art objects and decorative collections. Particularly distinctive is the architectural construction of the Mariano. The elongated vertical supports extend beyond the horizontal shelves, while the subtly sculpted and curved transitions between the structural elements soften the otherwise rigorous geometry. These carefully considered details create a beautiful vertical rhythm and give the composition an unmistakable three-dimensional presence. Executed in stained walnut, the bookcase displays a rich, deep brown tone with beautifully visible natural wood grain. The warm stained finish emphasizes the sculptural construction and gives the substantial composition considerable depth and sophistication. When positioned together, the three elements form an imposing architectural statement while maintaining a remarkable sense of visual balance and lightness. The modular construction also provides flexibility, allowing the elements to be positioned together or individually according to the architecture of the interior. Condition Very good and beautifully preserved original vintage condition. The stained walnut surfaces retain their original finish and present exceptionally well for a piece dating from 1961. Only light and age-appropriate traces of use are present. The wood has developed a beautiful, authentic patina while retaining its rich color, grain and refined appearance. No unnecessary restoration has been undertaken, preserving the original materials, surfaces, finish and authentic vintage character of this important Italian design.
