The crate bears original yellow stenciling connecting it to Milwaukee artist Morley Hicks (1877–1959) and the Art Institute of Chicago, giving the piece an unusual association with Midwestern art history.

Constructed from horizontally arranged wooden planks, the shallow rectangular crate was designed to protect a relatively large, flat object during transportation. Its proportions suggest it may have held artwork, framed material, exhibition documents, or another item requiring secure institutional shipment. The precise contents originally transported in the crate remain unknown.

One face is prominently stenciled “Return to Morley Hicks” with his Milwaukee address, while additional lettering identifies the Art Institute of Chicago. The inscriptions suggest that the crate traveled between the museum and Hicks, possibly in connection with an exhibition, loan, or other professional correspondence.

The crate features a hinged access panel, metal hinges, and a substantial steel hasp capable of accepting a padlock. Its dark, age-worn surface, utilitarian plank construction, faded institutional markings, and original hardware give it an authentic industrial character. It may now serve as decorative storage, an artist’s portfolio case, or a sculptural display object.
