An exceptionally rare and almost completely documented dining room by the renowned belgian ateliers d’art de coene frères, courtrai, crafted in 1927 in oak and distinctive zebrano.
the ensemble originates from a single historical commission and boasts exceptionally comprehensive documentation for furniture of this period. Of particular note is the original invoice from de coene frères dated november 25, 1927.
it explicitly refers to the furnishings as “salle à manger b.l.m. Zebrano.”
the invoice lists the individual components of the dining room furnishings: a buffet/argentier cabinet, a dressing table with a marble top, a rectangular table, six chairs, and a mirror and frame.
furthermore, the large argentier cabinet is illustrated in a historical de coene catalog, where it is described as
“argentier – type b.l.m. 2 – chêne et zébrano.”
the historical image allows for a direct comparison with the preserved furniture and underscores the exceptionally clear provenance and authenticity of this ensemble.
exceptional original condition!
of particular importance is the high degree of preserved original substance. The furniture was not fundamentally restored or modernized, but rather professionally cleaned, conserved, and carefully refurbished. The express aim was to preserve the historical appearance and the original surfaces.
among other things, the historical surfaces, the original fittings and decorative metal parts, as well as essential structural and design details of the original construction, have been preserved.
the original de coene key is particularly noteworthy, its brass ring clearly marked with
“de coene frères – courtrai.”
the maker's mark on the furniture itself is also present.
the four chairs are part of the ensemble's historical furnishings. Their wood and surfaces have been preserved; the seats have been professionally reupholstered for continued use.
design and materials
this ensemble exemplifies the sophisticated furniture production of de coene frères in the late 1920s. The combination of warm oak and the strongly linear, exotic-looking zebrano veneer defines the entire dining room.
this is complemented by dark-accented carved and turned elements, high-quality metal fittings, and carefully placed decorative details.
particularly characteristic are the curved base lines of the cabinetry, the decoratively framed glass doors of the sideboard, and the expressive hardware. The smaller dressing room features an original marble top and an exceptional mirrored upper section with highly stylized, geometrically curved elements.
the large table is designed as an extendable table. Its tabletop displays an elaborately structured veneer design with geometric panels and, together with the four chairs, forms the centerpiece of the ensemble.
a rare, complete ensemble!
complete dining room sets by de coene frères from this period are extremely rare today. Often, only individual cabinets, tables, or chairs have survived.
this set, however, is a complete ensemble whose date of origin, manufacturer, model group, and original scope of delivery can be directly documented by the surviving historical invoice and contemporary catalog material.
according to a recognized specialist in de coene frères, this is one of the extremely rare remaining complete sets of this type. While its absolute uniqueness cannot be definitively proven scientifically, the combination of completeness, original condition, and documentation is exceptional.
the ensemble thus represents not only a high-quality historical dining room set but also a documented testament to belgian furniture and design history of the late 1920s.
