Peter Camfferman (1890–1957) was born in The Hague, Holland, and immigrated to the United States at a young age. He studied at the Minneapolis School of Fine Art, where he met his future wife and artistic partner, Margaret Gove Camfferman.
The couple married in 1914 and traveled, studied, and created art together, including a period of study with French modernist André Lhote in Paris. In 1915, they settled in Langley, Washington, on Whidbey Island, where they built their home and studio, Brackenwood. Constructed largely by hand, with furniture sometimes made from gathered driftwood, Brackenwood eventually grew into an eight-cabin artists’ retreat known as the Brackenwood Art Colony.
The Camffermans helped establish Brackenwood as a cultural center, teaching art classes and hosting prominent modern artists including Mark Tobey, Alexander Archipenko, Kenneth Callahan, Morris Graves, and Amédée Ozenfant.
Both were members of Seattle’s Group of Twelve and were recognized as important figures in Northwest modernism. Peter was also a member of the Puget Sound Group of Northwest Artists. Their work was exhibited at institutions and events including the Seattle Art Museum, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Art Museum, and Smithsonian traveling exhibitions.
