Published in 1980 by Kodansha International, German Folk Art by Ernst Schlee is an extensively illustrated survey of traditional German decorative and folk arts from the late Middle Ages through the mid-19th century.
Translated from Schlee's German Volkskunst in Deutschland by Otto Ballin, this is the stated first edition of the English-language publication. The substantial volume explores the relationship between everyday handmade objects, regional traditions, materials, craftsmanship, and the broader cultural history of Germany.
Subjects include historic house decoration and architecture, painted and unpainted furniture, cupboards and chests, carved and painted wooden objects, ceramics, metalwork, painted glass, textiles, costume and ornament, religious objects, and other forms of traditional German craftsmanship.
Lavishly illustrated with 39 color plates, approximately 400 black-and-white photographs, and a map, the book offers an especially rich visual reference for collectors of European folk art, antique furniture, textiles, ceramics, vernacular design, and decorative arts.
The original black dust jacket features a colorful 19th-century painted folk-art object against a striking minimalist ground, making the volume attractive as both a reference work and decorative coffee-table book.
