The painting is particularly striking for its physical surface. Thick passages of oil and expressive palette-knife work build the architecture, pedestrians, storefronts and rain-slicked street. Broken strokes of cream, ochre, turquoise and warm orange emerge from a predominantly muted palette, while reflections across the pavement give the scene a wonderful sense of a city after rain.

The architecture and atmosphere evoke a Parisian or continental European boulevard, although the exact location has not been identified.

The work is signed lower right with a signature that appears possibly similar to “Dumoulin.” The artist has not been conclusively identified, so the painting is presented as the work of an unidentified artist rather than with an unsupported attribution. It is undated.

The painting is presented in a substantial gold-tone frame with raised Baroque-inspired ornament at the corners and center points and a wide dark inner surround. The dramatic framing gives the piece considerable presence and complements the old-world character of the street scene beautifully.
