Antique Imperial Russian hand-worked brass jardinière or cachepot, made in Tula, Russia, dating to the late 19th or early 20th century.
A beautifully detailed example, the cylindrical hammered brass vessel is raised on three elaborate foliate supports terminating in paw feet. Applied lion-mask mounts hold substantial movable ring handles, while contrasting copper-toned rivets remain visible throughout the construction.
The underside retains a worn Imperial double-headed eagle device and old Cyrillic factory/Tula marking, identifying the piece with the celebrated metalworking center of Tula during Russia’s Imperial period.
Particularly appealing is the untouched surface. More than a century of age has produced a richly variegated brass patina in shades of warm gold, ochre, brown and subtle copper. It has not been polished.
A wonderful decorative object on its own, or suitable for use as a cachepot or jardinière with an appropriate liner.
