The richly painted scene features an elaborate pink and white gown, a dramatic burgundy upholstered chair, floral accents and a sophisticated palette of deep reds, greens, pinks and golds. The theatrical composition and detailed costumes are characteristic of the 19th-century European Orientalist tradition.

The painting is signed in the lower-left corner, with the inscription appearing to include “Roma.” The artist has not been definitively identified, making this an especially intriguing piece for collectors interested in signed and unidentified 19th-century European paintings.

The reverse retains its older stretcher and construction, along with handwritten markings and evidence of age. The painting has an authentic aged appearance and has not been aggressively cleaned or over-restored, preserving its original character and surface.

A compelling decorative and collectible work for an interior, gallery wall or collection of 19th-century European, Orientalist or Academic paintings.
