Three vessels crowd the composition as cannon smoke rises between the ships and whitecaps break across the foreground. The richly decorated stern of the nearest warship provides a particularly striking focal point, picked out in warm passages of ochre, red and yellow against the cool blue-gray sea and sky.

Visible brushwork and areas of raised paint give this compact painting considerable texture and movement. Sails, smoke, rigging and breaking waves are rendered with energetic strokes that reward viewing up close.

Signed “J. Harvey” in red at the lower right. Paintings bearing the J. Harvey signature appear on the secondary market with maritime subjects including historic sailing ships, naval battles and seascapes.
