The substantial carved wooden frame is designed to resemble bamboo and surrounds black lacquer decorative panels. The panels feature elaborate three-dimensional carved botanical decoration in a warm ivory-colored material, including flowers and leaves with finely incised details.

The decoration appears consistent with Japanese Shibayama-style workmanship, possibly dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, although I have not had the piece professionally dated or attributed. The pale carved material appears to be bone or possibly ivory and has not been professionally identified. There is also a small red-and-white seal-style decorative cartouche incorporated into the lower-left portion of the design.

The mirror has lovely age and character and has not been refinished or restored. There are a few small areas where individual pieces of the decorative material are missing, as visible in the photographs. There is also some expected wear and minor loss to the lacquer and decorative finish consistent with age. These imperfections are disclosed as part of the condition of the piece.

Overall, this is a substantial and distinctive decorative mirror with unusually detailed carved botanical work and a wonderful aged surface. It would be particularly appealing to someone interested in Japanese decorative arts, Shibayama-style work, Asian lacquer, or Chinoiserie interiors.
