Constructed in the Georgian tradition, this substantial two-part case piece combines a bookcase, writing desk and chest of drawers, with an exceptionally charming fitted interior concealed behind its fall front.

The upper bookcase is crowned by a substantial molded cornice and fitted with a pair of beautifully shaped, raised-panel oak doors. Inside are adjustable wooden shelves offering generous storage for books, collections or display.

Below, the slant-front bureau opens to form a writing surface and reveal the remarkable fitted interior: an architectural arrangement of pigeonholes, numerous small drawers, curved compartments and concealed storage. Small brass pulls accent the interior drawers.

The lower case contains two short drawers above two wide drawers and terminates in traditional bracket feet. Period brass pulls and escutcheons complement the richly aged oak, while early iron locks, hinges and traditional joinery remain visible throughout. The hardware appears consistent with the considerable age of the piece and is believed to be substantially original.

Construction details include hand-cut dovetails, wide solid boards, paneled construction, early slotted screws and substantial hand-worked joinery characteristic of pre-industrial cabinetmaking.

The oak has developed an exceptional surface after more than two centuries, with deep color, irregularity, wear and patina that could only develop through generations of use.

Historical Context

This secretary was sourced in New Bern, North Carolina, one of the most important port towns of colonial North Carolina.

Its precise history prior to its discovery in New Bern is unknown, and no specific early ownership or provenance is claimed. However, its late 18th-century date places its construction in the remarkable period surrounding the American Revolution, when New Bern served as the colonial capital of North Carolina and maintained extensive commercial connections with Great Britain.

The form itself is distinctly Georgian: known in Britain as a bureau bookcase, pieces of this type provided a household with writing space, document storage, drawers and a book cabinet within a single imposing piece of furniture.

Condition

Remarkable antique condition considering its approximately 250 years of age.

The secretary retains the wonderfully imperfect character expected of genuine early furniture. There are scratches, stains, surface wear, finish and color variation, age-related shrinkage, separations, cracks, old repairs, edge and molding wear, oxidation to the hardware and other evidence of centuries of use.

The wide solid drawer-bottom and case boards exhibit characteristic shrinkage and age-related separations. Hardware has substantial patina and appears appropriate to the period. We believe much of the hardware to be original.

The aged surface has intentionally been preserved. We have not attempted to erase the evidence of the piece's history through aggressive restoration or refinishing.

Please examine all photographs closely, as they are considered an important part of the condition description.

A rare opportunity to own a functional piece of late Georgian furniture dating from the era of the American Revolution—a spectacular addition to an old house, library, study or collected interior. See less
