c. 1930s-1940s; mfd. by Fred E. Gilbert Co. - San Francisco, CA
Illuminated countertop advertising sign promoting "For Health and Quality Sanitary Infant Dairy," featuring a reverse-painted glass front with a stylized milk bottle integrated into the word "DAIRY." During the 1930s and 1940s, dairies frequently emphasized "sanitary" milk in their advertising as consumers became increasingly aware of food safety, pasteurization, and hygienic bottling practices. Public health campaigns and stricter dairy regulations encouraged producers to promote cleanliness and quality, particularly for milk intended for infants and young children, making signs such as this an effective reassurance to customers.
The sign is housed in its original wood-framed, textured sheet metal lightbox with rear sliding access panel for bulb replacement. The top retains the original Fred E. Gilbert Co. manufacturer's decal, and the housing includes two factory attachment points for hanging or display.
