A wonderfully evocative pair of circa 1900 English School equestrian portraits, these charming works depict two individual horses rendered with remarkable delicacy and character. Created at the turn of the 20th century, they capture the enduring English tradition of sporting and equestrian art while offering an especially unusual feature: each portrait is hand painted on silk.
The silk support gives the paintings a distinctive quality that is difficult to achieve on conventional paper or canvas. Its subtle natural sheen interacts beautifully with changing light, lending the horses and surrounding landscapes a soft luminosity and depth. Fine brushwork and restrained earthy colors give each portrait the intimate character of a privately commissioned sporting study rather than a conventional decorative print.
Each framed portrait measures approximately 15.25 inches wide, 12.25 inches high, and 1 inch deep. The visible artwork opening measures approximately 9 inches wide by 7.25 inches high. Both paintings are framed under glass. The paintings remain beautifully presented as a matched pair, each displayed beneath glass and surrounded by a generously proportioned gold-colored matte. Their matching frames feature richly textured, ornate borders in warm gold tones, creating a layered presentation that complements the understated colors of the artwork while giving the pair considerable decorative presence. Good antique condition, some age-related spotting to the silk and light rubbing to the frames. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
These are particularly appealing pieces for an English country house, traditional library, gentleman's study, equestrian interior, or Ralph Lauren-inspired room. Displayed together—whether stacked vertically or hung side by side—the matching portraits have the collected, old-world character that works so well alongside leather, mahogany, brass, tartan, and other classic sporting furnishings.
A distinctive and highly decorative pair combining English sporting tradition, turn-of-the-century craftsmanship, and the unusual beauty of hand-painted silk—wonderful survivors for the collector of equestrian art or anyone seeking authentic English country-house character.
