A true piece of Pennsylvania history, this work captures the quiet, enduring soul of Lancaster County. Hackman's architectural focus beautifully highlights the regional fieldstone structures and traditional folk motifs unique to the area.
Immerse your space in the historic charm of mid-century Pennsylvania regionalism with this exceptional, original watercolor painting by celebrated Lancaster County artist Floyd F. Hackman (American, 1899–1988). This evocative landscape beautifully captures the architectural heritage and serene rural atmosphere of Lancaster County’s historic farmlands. The centerpiece of the composition is a beautifully detailed historic stone structure—resembling a traditional Pennsylvania fieldstone millhouse or homestead—featuring a weathered tin roof, striking blue doors, and a classic hex-style star motif emblazoned on the gable end. Hackman deftly frames the scene with towering, mature deciduous trees and a sprawling pasture enclosed by rustic post-and-wire fencing. A lone figure in a blue dress walks along a dirt pathway in the midground, guiding the viewer's eye through the narrative of the peaceful landscape. The piece is executed on heavy, premium watercolor paper, showcasing Hackman’s masterful control over texture, light, and a rich regional palette of deep moss greens, earth-toned ochres, and sky blues. The back of the sheet reveals an authentic, historical watermark from the legendary French papermill Arches (J. Perrigot Arches / Special M.B.M / France), emphasizing the museum-grade materials favored by the artist.
About the Artist: Floyd Flory Hackman was a highly influential figure in the 20th-century Pennsylvania art scene. Born and raised in Lancaster County, he was a member of both the prestigious American Watercolor Society and the International Society of Artists. A pillar of his creative community, Hackman co-founded the Village Art Association in 1949 and established the long-running Lititz Outdoor Art Show, where the prestigious "Floyd Hackman Award" is still presented annually in his honor. Today, he is remembered as a "Lititz Legend" whose paintings offer a finite, non-renewable window into the architectural history and soul of the region.
