Acquired in 1972, this singletree was among a few items left behind in the mid-1800's barn when we bought our late 1700's farmhouse in central NY. It is most likely from the mid to late 1800's -- the hand forged ironwork is beautifully done and pre-dates the machined parts which came in soon after the turn of the century.
Singletrees were .used to balance and distribute the pulling force of a horse or other draft animal when pulling a wagon, plow, cart or carriage. Singletrees work so well for their purpose that they are still used today, though in modern machine-made form.
Displays beautifully. I used this as a wall decoration in our restored but rustic farmhouse, and it later hung in the kitchen of our Victorian. I have no space for it now, so must let it go.

The oak has a few minor dings, but is very solid and sound. The ironwork shows very little sign of wear and almost no rust. Once every few years, I have applied a blend of beeswax and orange oil that has kept the oak in excellent condition. less
