The original illustration appeared as Plate 25 in Volume V, published in 1685, depicting the branching foliage of the plant now generally identified as Allophylus cobbe.

The composition retains the remarkable multilingual inscriptions of the original botanical plate, including Latin and South Asian scripts, giving the work a particularly scholarly and early-scientific character. Hortus Malabaricus documented the flora of India’s Malabar Coast and is an important early work of botanical illustration. The surviving historic volumes include Latin, Malabar, Arabic and Brahman-script plant names.

This Natural Curiosities interpretation is printed on substantial handmade-style paper with visible deckled edges and the company’s embossed Natural Curiosities seal at the lower right. Float-mounted against an ivory textile ground and presented under glass in a handsome dark striped wood frame.
