Large-scale framed botanical artwork by Natural Curiosities, adapted from an historic natural-history illustration associated with Scottish explorer James Bruce’s celebrated Travels to Discover the Source of the Nile, first published in 1790.
Titled “Balefsan”, the composition depicts the highly distinctive branching balsam tree with finely rendered foliage, exposed root structure, a separate leaf study, and a hand-colored botanical fruit detail. The lower portion retains the historic inscription referring to Bruce’s Travels, giving the work an especially compelling archival character.
Produced by Natural Curiosities on substantial handmade-style paper with deckled edges and an intentionally aged, antiqued appearance. The sheet bears the embossed Natural Curiosities seal at the lower corner and is float mounted against a neutral textile ground. Presented under glazing in a substantial dark wood-grain frame.
The nearly square 45.5" × 46" scale makes this a particularly strong statement piece. Its combination of historical botanical imagery, restrained color, and sculptural tree form works beautifully in traditional, organic-modern, transitional, library, study, or collected interiors.

The sheet displays pronounced tonal variation, mottling and tide-mark-like areas as part of its distressed antique presentation. Natural Curiosities is known to reproduce historical botanical imagery on handmade paper with an intentionally aged patina; a comparable Natural Curiosities botanical is specifically described by a dealer as having a “distressed and aged patina.” Minor wear to the frame consistent with previous display.
