Oversized framed botanical and horticultural study by Natural Curiosities, adapted from an early-19th-century plate associated with British horticulturist William Forsyth.
Titled “Vine,” the composition illustrates a highly graphic method of training grapevine branches, with sinuous vertical growth rising from a symmetrical espalier-like base. The original source dates to 1802, during Forsyth’s tenure associated with the Royal Gardens at Kensington. Forsyth’s influential publication documented methods for pruning, training and improving fruit trees and vines.
Natural Curiosities has reinterpreted the historical image on substantial handmade-style paper with intentionally irregular deckled edges and an aged neutral coloration. The company’s embossed Natural Curiosities seal is visible at the lower right. Float-mounted against a warm ivory textile ground and presented under glass in a simple dark wood frame.
The very wide horizontal format gives the work an architectural quality that works particularly well over a console, sofa, credenza or long dining-room wall.
