A handsome George III mahogany sideboard dating to circa 1800, distinguished by beautifully figured and bookmatched mahogany veneers and an unusually architectural bowfront form. The stepped gallery rises above a long serving surface, with a central frieze drawer flanked by deep, bowed end compartments traditionally intended for the storage of bottles and serving pieces.
The façade is particularly attractive, with richly figured veneers framed by delicate line inlay, original-style circular brass ring pulls and key escutcheons. A dramatically shaped central apron provides an elegant counterpoint to the substantial case, which is raised on six slender square tapering legs with subtle inset panel decoration.
An especially decorative example of the late Georgian sideboard, combining the restrained neoclassical proportions of the period with exceptional mahogany figuring. Its long scale and relatively open base give it considerable presence without appearing visually heavy.
Condition consistent with approximately 225 years of age, including scattered surface wear, veneer movement, age cracks, repairs and later alterations as expected.
