Vintage brass “Cobra” desk lamp manufactured by the Faries Manufacturing Co. of Decatur, Illinois, during the 1940s. Designed as a practical task light, the lamp uses a broad, flattened hood to shield the bulb from direct view and direct illumination downward onto the work surface.
The low-profile circular shade limits horizontal glare around the lamp, helping reduce eye strain while reading, drafting, writing, or performing other close bench work. Its wide, flattened silhouette and curved supporting neck inspired the distinctive “Cobra” name.
Constructed from darkly patinated brass, the lamp features a tapered neck with streamlined ring accents near the base. A circular weighted foot provides stability, while a small toggle switch positioned on the base controls the light. The compact proportions make it suitable for a desk, drafting table, bedside table, or industrial workspace.
The combination of purposeful glare control, restrained ornamentation, and an aerodynamic silhouette reflects the streamlined industrial design of the 1940s.
