The deity is richly adorned with an ornate crown, jewellery and extensively chased and engraved robes, while the hands hold Buddhist ritual attributes including a vajra (金刚杵), one of the principal symbols of Vajrayana Buddhism, representing spiritual power and the indestructible nature of enlightenment. The figure is of hollow metal construction with a silvered finish and displays particularly accomplished workmanship throughout, from the serene facial expression and elaborate crown to the finely worked scrolling decoration covering the robes and lotus pedestal. The surface has developed attractive natural patination and wear, giving the sculpture considerable character and presence. Dating from the 20th century, it is a wonderful example of 藏传佛教艺术 (Tibetan Buddhist art) and the continuing tradition of Himalayan devotional metalwork. Of particular interest is the underside, which retains a separately fitted and sealed metal base plate, centrally engraved with a Buddhist vajra-type consecration symbol. This follows the traditional practice associated with Tibetan Buddhist devotional sculpture, whereby hollow sacred images could be filled with prayers, mantras and other consecratory materials before being ceremonially sealed. The presence of the plate and symbol should not itself be taken as confirmation that the figure presently contains such material, and the base appears best left undisturbed. Figures of this type were traditionally intended not simply as decorative objects but as a focus for meditation, prayer and contemplation. Within the home, a Buddhist image may be placed in a peaceful and respectful position, traditionally on a raised surface or home altar, creating a focal point for reflection and spiritual practice. In a modern interior it also makes a particularly striking sculptural object, representing ideas of 智慧 (zhìhuì – wisdom), 慈悲 (cíbēi – compassion) and spiritual enlightenment. A substantial and highly decorative piece with wonderful detail from every angle, equally suited to a collection of Asian works of art, a meditation room or as an impressive statement piece within a contemporary interior. Condition is commensurate with age, with surface wear, tarnishing and natural patination as illustrated.
