Dating to approximately 1900, this antique Caucasian runner is a handwoven wool rug representing the richly patterned weaving traditions of the Caucasus around the turn of the 20th century. Rugs from this region were traditionally produced in local weaving communities where distinctive geometric forms, stylized flowers, symbolic devices, and strong color relationships were combined into highly individual compositions. Rather than relying on a single oversized central medallion, this runner is organized as an extended field of repeating and alternating motifs, a format particularly well suited to its long proportions.
Measuring approximately 11'4" x 3'8", the rug has a substantial runner format that allows the pattern to develop continuously along its length. The dark navy blue field is densely populated with stylized flowers, rosettes, angular leaves, hooked forms, geometric medallions, small symbolic devices, and branching botanical elements. The motifs are arranged around a loose central axis while retaining the lively variation characteristic of handwoven Caucasian textiles. Particularly distinctive is the broad principal border composed of diagonal bands in ivory, red, blue, brown, and soft pink, which creates a strong visual frame around the much denser central field. Additional narrow floral borders complete the composition.
The palette includes deep navy, brick red, crimson, burgundy, ivory, cream, teal blue, medium blue, pale blue, pink, rose, brown, and touches of yellow and green. The wool construction gives the rug a substantial tactile character, while the handwoven irregularities and variations in the motifs distinguish it from mechanically produced floor coverings. Its combination of a densely ornamented field, unusual diagonal striped border, elongated proportions, and varied traditional motifs makes this a particularly decorative example of antique Caucasian weaving.
Today, its 11'4" length makes it especially suitable for a hallway, gallery, entry passage, or other long architectural space. Beyond its decorative function, it remains an appealing historical textile whose handwoven construction, regional design vocabulary, and naturally aged surface reflect more than a century of history.
