splendid ceramic sculpture with a silver metallic coating depicting a pair of scottish terriers, a superb masterpiece of mid-20th-century decorative animal art, entirely crafted and signed by the renowned master sculptor carmelo ganci. The work is distinguished by its extraordinary and energetic rendering of the clay, sculpted entirely by hand with exceptional descriptive finesse that admirably encapsulates the characteristic traits of the dog breed, such as the pointed ears, the square and expressive muzzle covered by thick whiskers, and the thick, coarse coat that vibrates under the modeler's strokes. The sculpture expresses an intimate sweetness mingled with a fierce, protective pride, with the larger specimen affectionately embracing the back of the puppy below, resting its front paw on it. The ceramic surface is enhanced by the renowned and complex technique of electroplating a polished silver metallic coating over the rough terracotta, a cutting-edge process that creates a dense and evocative metallic patina with iridescent reflections that masterfully enhances the chiaroscuro effects of the fur. The work is firmly anchored to a substantial, mirror-polished molded solid wood base, secured at the bottom with three contemporary screws, a structural element typical of the atelier's most luxurious desk and living room pieces. The dog's hind leg bears the original engraved signature "c. Ganci," surmounted by the prestigious and rare rectangular mark of guarantee and origin "fabriqué en italie," applied to unique pieces destined for the elite international market. The attribution is absolute and unassailable, fitting perfectly within the celebrated series of high-class animalier sculptures that carmelo ganci created in milan starting in 1934. He was strongly influenced by the eclectic taste of guido cacciapuoti, whose stylistic influence he was an illustrious proponent for the formal irony and monumental quality of his subjects.
artist and/or manufacturer information:
carmelo ganci (palermo 1903 – milan), a sculptor and master ceramist of extraordinary technical skill, occupied a prominent position in the decorative arts and applied sculpture of twentieth-century italy. Having moved to milan, in 1934 he opened a renowned avant-garde workshop called "ganci ceramiche," where he embarked on an eclectic and sophisticated production that effortlessly ranged from classical to exquisitely modernist and art deco styles. The distinctive and revolutionary feature of his atelier was the perfecting of the technique of metal coating using galvanoplastic methods on raw terracotta, a complex chemical-physical process that combined the plastic ductility of hand-molded clay with the lustrous solemnity of precious metals such as silver and copper. Deeply rooted in milan's vibrant artistic scene, ganci collaborated closely with the sculptural imagination of the renowned guido cacciapuoti factory, specializing in high-end "animalier" sculptures that became the hallmark of his terracotta production. His masterpieces, celebrated for their perfect balance between the ironic expressiveness of the subject and the metallic splendor of the surfaces, were featured in major postwar decorative art exhibitions and are now included in prestigious international private collections and in the catalogs of historic galleries dedicated to modern antiques and 20th-century sculpture.
