Likely … Read more This polychrome faience covered bowl was created after a design by jacques le tanneur for dax, france, circa 1930. Likely intended as a bonbonnière or small covered serving bowl, it combines an architectural art deco form with richly hand-painted regionalist decoration.

the rounded body is raised on a small foot and flanked by two sculptural handles, while the domed lid is surmounted by a prominent finial. The cream crackle-glazed surface is decorated with geometric and stylized floral motifs in ochre yellow, deep red and speckled cobalt blue.

at the center of the composition appears one of le tanneur’s characteristic regional figures: an elderly man shown in profile, dressed in black with a traditional beret and supporting himself on a curved walking stick. The restrained treatment of the figure provides a striking counterpoint to the more elaborate geometric and floral decoration surrounding it.

the decoration is signed “j. Le tanneur”, while the piece also bears the handwritten designation “dax 105”, providing an important identifying reference to the dax production.
