painter, draftsman, graphic artist, illustrator, writer.

in 1909, he abandoned his engineering studies at the technical university of munich and began taking painting lessons from wladimir magidey.

seewald moved in munich's bohemian circles. He initially earned his living by drawing caricatures for the magazines "jugend," "lustige blätter," and "meggendorfer blätter."

in 1910, 1913, and 1916, he stayed in ascona, where he belonged to the life-reformist community of the "vegetable cooperative" monte verità.

in 1911, he married emma margarete (uli) trotsch (d. 1967) in london.

also in 1911, he participated in his first exhibitions, including the "paris salon d'automne."

in 1913, he participated in the first "der sturm" autumn salon in berlin.

from 1914 to 1918, he was exempt from front-line service.

in 1921, his first illustrated book, "animals and landscape," was published.

from 1922/23, seewald moved in the hochland circle around carl muth.

between 1922 and 1924, the artist undertook several trips through italy, including to sicily, and also traveled to tunis.

1924–31 professor of painting, graphic arts, and book design at the cologne school of applied arts (from 1926: school of applied arts).

in 1927, he commissioned theodor merrill to build a modern villa for him in rodenkirchen.

in 1929, he converted to catholicism.

from 1931 onward, he lived permanently in ronco.

in 1937, a total of 163 of his works were confiscated from german museums as "degenerate art."

in 1939, he received swiss citizenship.

from 1954–58, professor of graphic arts, painting, and mural painting at the academy of fine arts munich.

in 1961, he was commissioned to decorate the arcades in the munich hofgarten.

shortly before his death, on september 15, 1976, the richard and uli seewald foundation was established in ascona, to which seewald bequeathed his estate and his entire oeuvre, consisting of his own works, his collection of paintings by various artists, and his property including his house and studio.
