Designed by Alfred Homann for Louis Poulsen, the "Rappe Louis" is molded as a single, continuous Z-bend in bold purple ABS plastic, its stylized duck-beak head giving the lamp both its nickname and its unmistakable postmodern silhouette.

Alfred Homann, an award-winning Danish architect and designer, created "Rappe Louis" at the tail end of the 1980s — right as home computers and keyboards began colonizing desks, leaving less and less room for a bulky lamp. Its flat, low-profile form was a direct answer to that: a lamp that takes up almost no desk space while still throwing a focused beam exactly where it's needed. The name is a play on the Danish word "rap," meaning both "quick" and "quack" — a nod to the duck-billed head.

Now considered one of the most recognizable examples of Scandinavian postmodernism, "Rappe Louis" is a favorite among collectors of 1980s design for its wit, its slim profile, and its instantly identifiable silhouette.
