Antique Japanese tansu chest of drawers, dating from ca. 1910–1920, Taishō period, Japan.
This low wooden chest is arranged with two wide drawers and two smaller drawers on the right-hand side. The different drawer sizes create a practical layout and give the piece a distinctive asymmetrical appearance.
Dimensions: height 60 cm, width 88 cm, depth 43.5 cm.
The front is richly fitted with traditional black iron hardware, including decorative corner fittings, handles and lock plates. Sturdy iron carrying handles are also fitted to the sides, a typical feature of Japanese tansu designed to be moved when needed.
The warm wood has developed a beautiful patina over time, with visible signs of age and use that enhance the authentic character of the chest. The combination of restrained woodwork and dark iron fittings gives the piece a strong Japanese presence.
