An exceptional and highly decorative pair of Venetian consoles dating from the late 18th to early 19th century, circa 1790–1810. Crafted in carved wood, the consoles retain a remarkable polychrome and gilt decoration executed in the manner of Venetian lacca povera, a decorative tradition closely associated with Venetian furniture and the use of applied printed imagery combined with painted ornament. Each console features an unusually shaped serpentine top with pronounced curves and cut-out sides, richly decorated with numerous figurative scenes, elegant period characters, architectural and landscape vignettes, butterflies and ornamental motifs, all arranged against muted ochre and green grounds. The shaped aprons are particularly elaborate, composed of a series of pendant elements individually embellished with small figures. The decoration continues onto the sculptural legs, where further figures in period costume appear within painted reserves. The legs are joined by elegant curved stretchers, giving the consoles a light and architectural silhouette. The surfaces retain an attractive aged patina, with craquelure, rubbing, losses and traces of wear consistent with their age. These imperfections contribute considerably to the historic character and authenticity of the pieces. Please refer carefully to the photographs for the condition. Rare to find as a surviving pair, these consoles are striking examples of the exuberant decorative tradition of Venetian furniture around 1800 and would make an impressive statement in either a classical or contemporary interior.
