Bring an organic, highly textured look to your dining room with this rare set of four raffia-woven dining chairs.
originally designed by architect jan vaněk and produced by poradna moderního bydlení (p.m.b.), these chairs were debuted at the 1937 christmas furniture exhibition in prague, czechoslovakia. Manufactured in very limited numbers, they represent a unique piece of central european modernist history.
each chair has been completely restored and re-woven. It took a total of 80 hours on woodwork and weaving to bring this set back to life, using approximately 45 meters of natural raffia per chair. The solid beech frames have been stained to a rich teak/walnut tone and finished with 6 coats of osmo semi-matte hardwax oil. The frames are completely healthy and free of woodworm.
all four chairs feature the original thonet stamp on the lower front section of the seat frame while utilizing thonet seat-to-back-leg anchoring system, identical to the engineering found on josef hoffmann's famous model a 811 chair.
seat height is 47 cm. Historically, these chairs were often paired with additional loose cushions for maximum comfort.
jan vaněk was a visionary entrepreneur, publisher, and teacher dedicated to promoting tasteful, modern living. He was one of the original founders and the first director of the legendary up závody (later made famous by jindřich halabala). Vaněk also founded the s.b.s. Furniture company and collaborated extensively with institutions like krásná jizba and úluv. This piece has an attribution mark,
