A petite young dancer with her hair tied in a knot at the nape of her neck, wearing a short, tight-fitting dress with a fringed hem and long trumpet sleeves, as well as a large ruff, posing with her hands raised at her sides as she takes a cautious step. The figure, cast in partially patinated bronze, stands on a small, tall, stepped oval plinth made of black, grey and white marble with greenish-golden inclusions; it bears the signature ‘lorenzl’ on the side, below the upper edge. Excellent and detailed quality of execution, very lifelike representation, as is typical of viennese bronze art. There is also a similar design by josef lorenzl, which was produced by the viennese ceramics manufacturer goldscheider as model number 6248. Portrait of clotilde von derp (born clotilde margarete anna edle von der planitz on 5 november 1892 in berlin; died on 11 january 1974 in rome) performing her dance ‘papillons’ to music by robert schumann, 1912. She was a renowned german dancer and one of the most important early exponents of modern expressive dance. From 1913 onwards, she formed an internationally renowned dance duo with her future husband, the russian dancer alexander sacharoff. She had a decisive influence on the european avant-garde dance scene of the early 20th century. The couple were famous for their extravagant, androgynous costumes and fluid choreography. Designed by josef lorenzl (1892-1950), an austrian sculptor. His statuettes often show graceful dancers with long legs and closed eyes. Lorenzl also designed ceramics for friedrich goldscheider and keramos. He was one of the most popular artists of art déco. Manufactured ca. 1915-1920 by a viennese bronze manufactory bronze modeling and casting, silver plating and cold painting dimensions: total height: 28,0 cm / 11.02 in hight of figure: 22,0 cm / 8.66 in width: 11,0 cm / 4.33 in depth: 11,0 cm / 4.33 in weight: 1.976 grams / 69.55 oz / 63.53 troy oz condition: very good overall condition this piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
