Hand-knotted in wool, this grand 10x14 contemporary rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Modern collection, capturing twin celestial Chinese dragons in flight surrounded by auspicious cloud scrolls and a classical wave border over a warm camel canvas.
On the Design:
Channeling the monumental scale of grand Ming and Qing dynasty architectural banners, this grand statement piece reimagines ancient Chinese mythical portraiture with refined clarity. The expansive field centers on a paired configuration of opposing serpentine dragons, suspended in dynamic flight as their coiled, scale-patterned bodies frame central sacred pearl emblems. Floating throughout the upper field are traditional auspicious clouds (ruyi heads), flaming jewels, and bats symbolizing prosperity. Across the lower edge, a structured spandrel featuring diagonal standing-water bars and crashing wave motifs (lishui) establishes a firm terrestrial anchor, grounding the soaring celestial imagery above within a disciplined, classical border design.
The rich polychromatic colorway layers a warm beige foundation with cool blue, cream, taupe, and deep terracotta-red accents. Rendered in premium hand-spun wool, the field displays gentle, natural abrash variations that infuse the background with subtle movement and prevent the neutral ground from feeling static. Intricate slate-blue and charcoal tones define the articulated dragon scales, claws, and fierce facial details, allowing the central figures to stand out with graphic intensity. Dusty rose, ivory, and soft teal highlights outline the surrounding cloud swirls and lower wave crests. As light shifts across the lush pile, these contrasting hues catch soft natural highlights, bringing out every structural nuance and elevating the piece into an art-grade centerpiece for gallery-inspired spaces or curated private collections. he accompanying book, Tibetan Rugs by Rudi Molacek, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B075) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
