Hand-knotted in wool, this 9x12 contemporary rug joins Rug & Kilim’s Scandinavian collection. It features a plain teal-blue center field framed by serrated chevron borders and coral-rust bar perimeters.
On the Design:
Drawing inspiration from mid-20th-century Swedish weaving movements and the celebrated history of Nordic textile arts, this piece explores architectural geometry through a deeply textural, low-relief pile construction. Scandinavian rug-making traditions historically balanced functionalism with raw organic beauty, translating regional folk motifs into disciplined modern abstractions. Here, the layout is anchored around a minimalist, open teal-blue inner field featuring subtle horizontal abrash lines, providing a tranquil foundation that allows the surrounding graphic elements to command visual attention. Framing this expansive center is a sequence of repeating chevron bands and serrated saw-tooth borders that echo traditional Scandinavian flossa techniques and structural framing, balancing expansive negative space with rhythmic geometric momentum across the plush surface.
The colorway pairs a calming sea-glass teal foundation with rich navy-blue, dark charcoal, and high-contrast coral-rust accents. Micro-variations within the hand-spun wool yarns yield gentle tonal shifts across the central field, giving the solid teal expanse a soft, organic patina. Deep navy and charcoal lines define the serrated saw-tooth bands with crisp architectural clarity, while vibrant coral-rust and salmon-pink notes illuminate the outer perimeter step-bars. As natural light passes over the soft pile texture, these opposing cool and warm tones catch subtle highlights, bringing out the structural precision of the Nordic framework and elevating the piece into an art-grade centerpiece for gallery-inspired spaces or curated collections. The accompanying book, Scandinavian Design & the United States, 1890–1980 by Bobbye Tigerman and Monica Obniski, is part of Volumes by Rug & Kilim. The book (SKU - B047) can be acquired independently through our bookstore.
