A striking vintage French ceramic pitcher by Accolay, dating from the mid-20th century.
The sculptural form features a rounded, generously proportioned body, broad neck with a small pouring spout, and substantial loop handle. Its most distinctive feature is the warm red crackle glaze, contrasted by deep charcoal tones and a mottled blue-grey and turquoise glaze that emerges around the base and continues onto the handle.
A dense network of dark crackling gives the surface remarkable depth and texture, while the glaze shifts subtly in character according to the light. The interplay of warm red, graphite-like detailing and cooler blue-green tones creates a particularly rich and expressive surface.
The pitcher is equally compelling viewed from either side and works beautifully as a standalone sculptural object. Its organic form, distinctive coloration and highly textured glaze make it particularly suited to an eclectic, contemporary or layered mid-century interior.
Signed “Accolay” to the underside.
About Accolay
The Accolay pottery workshop was founded in Burgundy, France, in 1945 by André Boutaud, Louis Dangon, Slavik Paley, and Raudé, following their training under ceramist Alexandre Kostanda. Established in a former factory in the village of Accolay (Yonne), the studio became known for its experimental, handcrafted ceramics. In its early years, Accolay also produced ceramic jewelry and accessories that were notably used by Christian Dior for his “New Look” collections, before gaining international recognition for its distinctive mid-century studio pottery.
A distinctive example of postwar French studio pottery with considerable visual presence.
