Large-scale framed botanical study by Natural Curiosities, based on an early-19th-century horticultural illustration titled “St. Germain Pear-Tree.”
The original image relates to horticulturist William Forsyth and his 1802 Treatise on the Culture and Management of Fruit Trees. The plate illustrates Forsyth’s experimental method of rejuvenating and pruning an old pear tree, showing the fan-like growth of young branches alongside examples of the fruit.
Rendered in restrained sepia, charcoal and warm ivory tones, the composition has a striking graphic quality, with the radiating branches framed by two oversized pears. The lower inscription reads “Published Jan’y 1st 1802, for Wm. Forsyth, Kensington.”
Produced by Natural Curiosities on textured handmade-style paper and bearing the company’s embossed Natural Curiosities seal at the lower right. Float-mounted against an ivory textile backing and presented under glass in a substantial dark wood frame.
