The elongated, asymmetrical form is shaped into two shallow sections, with the pale ceramic inset introducing a restrained botanical motif in yellow and brown.
The dense, dark Bissilon wood gives the piece a rich surface and pronounced grain, while Milan’s carving keeps the form thin, fluid, and almost leaf-like. The contrast between the warm wood and ceramic makes it an especially distinctive example of mid-century American studio craft, equally suited as a functional bowl or displayed as a sculptural object. Signed Emil Milan to the underside and inscribed Bissilon, identifying the wood.
