A serpentine-front sideboard in the Hepplewhite manner, circa 1919, at a compact and genuinely usable scale.
A single long drawer, crossbanded in satinwood and divided inside into two sections, sits above a pair of cupboard doors panelled in richly figured walnut and outlined in the same banding. Carved paterae flank the case at the corners, carved brackets sit beneath the apron, and the whole stands on square tapered legs ending in spade feet. Small cast brass rosette pulls. Behind the doors, a full-width shelf.
The proportions are the point. At 49 inches wide it works as a dining room sideboard, a hall console, an entry piece or a media cabinet, which isn't true of the seven-foot sideboards of the period.
Measures 49 in. wide x 20 1/2 in. deep x 38 1/4 in. high.
Acquired from a Washington DC dealer in 1985 by an interior designer for her own home, and there since. No smoking or pets. The matching dining table and set of eight chairs are listed separately.
