The subject is a handsome saddled chestnut horse standing peacefully in an open landscape, identified beneath in period script as “Molly.”

Painted in a wonderfully loose, Impressionistic style, the artist uses expressive brushwork and an earthy palette of chestnut brown, olive green, ochre, and muted cream. Rather than concentrating on precise academic detail, the painting has an immediate, almost spontaneous quality—the landscape is suggested through broad strokes while Molly remains the clear focal point. Particularly appealing are the loosely rendered grasses and distant countryside, which give the work an unmistakably rustic English country-house feeling.

Overall measurements: approximately 25.5 inches wide × 21 inches high × 2 inches deep. The painting remains housed in an impressive period gold gilt gesso frame, richly ornamented with classical molded decoration. Its warm, aged gilding beautifully complements the earthy tones of the painting and gives the piece considerable decorative presence. Good antique condition with light signs of wear. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.

A distinctive piece of turn-of-the-century equestrian art, this painting would be especially at home in an English country, Ralph Lauren-inspired, farmhouse, sporting, library, or traditional interior. The combination of the named horse, 1900 date, expressive painting style, and substantial antique gilt frame gives it wonderful character as both a historical object and unique wall décor. See less
